News flash: Boys are stupid. Breaking story: When white men believe they exist in a vacuum, they destroy themselves and ruin everything. Andrew Neel’s Goat, which is based on Brad Land’s memoir, follows Brad (Ben Schnetzer) on the way home from a party one night where he gets brutally beaten by a couple of hoodlums. He spends the summer recuperating and trying to decide whether or not he’ll start college on time at the fictional Brookman University. His brother Brett (Nick Jonas) is already a student and a brother in the Phi Sigma Mu fraternity at the school. Brad decides to go and pledge this perfect archetype of a frat, ostensibly because he feels he has to prove he’s still a man after experiencing a traumatic attack, and the hazing that ensues is truly disturbing.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Brad and Brett’s parents practically asked for this trouble when they named their sons. So were the parents of some of the other members of Phi Sigma Mu, Chance, Wes, and Dixon. As cliche as the testosterone-fueled frat boy hazing drama is, Goat’s depiction of the muck is definitely evocative. It dares you to look away. It’s visceral, primitive and uncomfortable in all the ways frat hazing is. It’s effective in the almost physical reaction it provokes. Watching it, you smell the vomit, you taste the stale beer, you are keenly aware of what testosterone can do to a human being. Goat gives you hell (week). But to what end?
It’s only in the last 10 minutes of the movie, only after one of the pledges dies that Brett finally decides this game of torture and degradation isn’t worth it. The other boys in the frat never get that woke. They remain concerned and reflective about the pledge’s tragic death only in so far as far as how it will affect their own personal futures. They’re torn up about expulsion and about job prospects but not about their potential contribution to the stress that led their peer to drop dead. And they never see the light, ever, at any point in the movie.
It’s hard to weather this gross and demeaning activity for so much of the movie without its perpetrators ever getting it. These frat boys are the men who believe they exist in a vacuum, the men whose whiteness and privilege blind them to every other conflict in the world. These are the types of boys who grow up to shoot innocent black people, to make laws governing the bodies and livelihoods of women, to use the power they were born with to never give a fuck about anyone else and never take responsibility for the obvious destruction they leave in their wake. And Goat seems, possibly, quietly, to sympathize with them. Its message is inconsistent; it’s unclear what Neel actually wants to say about hazing, about masculinity. Goat teeters on the “Being a white man is hard” line, and that left a bad feeling in my body.
I found myself thinking three things over the course of the film. These are simple, real-life ways all the internal and external torture these boys endure could have been handled or avoided:
- Brad really experiences actual PTSD from his attack. It’s understandable, it’s sad, and he should have been treated by a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist would have been able to treat his symptoms and to say to him that he didn’t have to join Phi Sigma Nu to be prove his masculinity.
- Parents exist. We see Brad and Brett’s for a literal second. Parents should have stepped in long before their sons became convinced they needed to roll around in mud in the middle of the woods after chugging a keg of beer to be a respectable member of society.
- Every woman depicted in the movie is an object (stripper), opportunity (to get laid), or obligation (nagging wife). The graduated bro, played by James Franco, exclaims with pained exhaustion that he has a wife and a kid before shotgunning a beer, making Brad punch him in the stomach, and passing out. If just one woman could have gotten through to them, they’d have some perspective.
Goat shows that when white men believe they exist in a vacuum, they destroy themselves and others. If these boys were forced to acknowledge that they’re not alone, to talk to and listen to literally anyone else from any other demographic, they would have been able to lift their heads out of that testosterone-laden quicksand.
But the characters, save for Brett and Brad at the very end, don’t learn. Anything. They don’t ever see anyone else. If Neel was trying to say something about the state of masculinity, about the fragility of the male psyche, he missed the mark. Yes, acknowledge the poison that is frat hazing, give us its devastating effects, but then teach these boys how to dig themselves out, how to widen their views and put their experiences into perspective. The way to do that is to show them their internalized notions of masculinity are positively medieval. The way to do that is to make these frat bros experience the stories of other kinds of people, of women, of people of color. Sure, it’s hard to watch a white boy being forced to choke down a toilet-water-soaked banana, but it’s probably harder to watch a white boy learn — really learn — that he’s not the only one that matters. That no matter how hard he personally has it, nearly everyone everywhere at every time has had it harder.
The two pop stars are “rising up” for the victims and survivors.
…as well as their close friend, The Voice finalist Christina Grimmie.
Last Saturday, Lovato and Jonas paid tribute to those affected by the Pulse nightclub shooting by honoring them a song, Andra Day’s song “Rise Up,” which they sang along with the Day herself.
“Thank you for having me. Orlando our prayers, love, and support are with you,” she continues.
The nightclub, meanwhile, says on Facebook, “Nick Jonas & Demi Lovato, thank you for making the pulse family smile.”
More Demi and Nick!
Celebrities who are passionate about their craft and who know how to keep their earnings get to fulfill their dreams any time they want. Many have developed the habit of investing in real estate properties in places they want to reside in or enjoy a holiday with their partner or families.
Even the younger generation of stars are now big earners and property owners. Through sheer determination and perseverance, they are able to earn more and buy things they want to own in a shorter period of time compared to the ordinary citizens. But then again, it’s not just pure luck for them because what they have right now is a result of their sweat and tears.
Owning a property at a young age is a huge achievement as many people in their 20’s still live with their parents. Here are some of the popular celebrities who are fortunate to have bought their own homes in their teens and 20’s.
Taylor Swift is one celebrity who continues to reap huge success worldwide. It is no surprise then if she owns several mansions. One is in Rhode Island worth $17.75 million and the latest one she bought is in Beverly Hills worth a whopping $25 million.
This Beverly Hills mansion used to be owned by the late movie producer, Samuel Goldwyn. With seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, this home is situated on an almost two-acre lot.
Did you know that Nick Jonas bought his first house when he was only 16 years old? Together with his brothers Joe and Kevin, these Disney celebrity siblings bought a mansion outside of Dallas, Texas for $3.2 million. The huge house has six bedrooms and six bathrooms.
Canadian sensation Justin Bieber also bought his own mansion at the age of 18. Situated in Calabasas, California, the estate cost $6.5 million which has a movie theater, swimming pool, a bar and a library.
Just last year, though, Bieber settled in his new home in Beverly Hills worth $35,000 per month to rent. It features six bedrooms and six bathrooms.
At only 17 years of age, Miley Cyrus already bought her own home in Toluca Lake, California. Worth $3.4 million, the mansion has four bedrooms, three swimming pools and tennis courts.
In 2015, she again bought a mansion on Hidden Hills worth $4 million. Measuring 5,123 square feet, the house has seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, a stable that can accommodate 10 horses, a riding arena, veggie garden, a hen house and vineyard.
What has the world come to?!
Kate Hudson, in what seemed to be a string of dates, got really comfy and cozy with Nick Jonas last Wednesday.
E! News‘ source first said that “there was a light kiss exchanged,” but then “Kate touch Nick’s leg at a point during dinner.”
The two were spotted first last September, then last weekend at a Super Bowl 50 party. However, many affirm that they’re not a couple. Yet.
The source even dishes, “There were laughs throughout the dinner and Kate had a huge smile on her face. Nick was a gentleman. You could tell they like each other.”
Will it last? Let’s see.
More Kate and Nick!
We're not sure how this happened, but we're totally supporting it!
Even though the horror/drama premieres in just ten days, Patrick Schwarzenegger was just announced as a new cast member on Saturday!
Most of the season has had to have been filmed by now, so we're not too sure what role he'll be playing in the story line, but we do know the 21-year-old will be playing Glen Powell's younger brother Thad.
The rest of the all-star cast is made up of Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Keke Palmer, Skyler Samuels, Diego Boneta, Lucien Laviscount, Oliver Hudson, Niecy Nash, Nasim Pedrad, and Billie Lorde, so we can't wait to watch the murders get started!

Kendall Jenner and Nick Jonas are dating; remember when he talked mad game about waiting till marriage for the Disney Channel? Yeah, I just wanted us all to remember that in this moment.
I want to clarify what “dating” means in this situation, it’s basically: Kendall and Nick date each other out of convenience, no lasting relationship foreseen, slow news week for Us Weekly.
Prepare yourself for the early teen coupling map.
The two were set up by Gigi Hadid, who is coincidentally Joe Jonas’ girlfriend (nicknamed G.I. Joe by friend in common, Cara Delevingne). Us Weekly informs us through their elusive sources that really this is a move by Gigi to have her friend around all the time, “She thinks it would be fun for all of them to hang out.” The source, added,”They are all going to end up hanging out regardless, so it seems like a simple situation, which could be a lot of fun.”
Oh my god. You have got to be kidding me. Us freaking Weekly, you realize you are reporting on high school style relationship status changes? Write something with substance like, Nicholas Cage Eats a Hot Pocket.
Technically, Kendall and Nick aren’t even like official yet, “They just like made out in his car once in a church parking lot so they’re basically together.” JK that’s a fake quote by yours truly, but try denying that it could fit this situation.
Just as you would suspect, the two are getting to know each other through texting and group dates, but apparently their friends claim they were flirty from the start.
Now is a good time to make bets with your friends about the length of their relationship. Remember, she is blood related to the Kardashians.
In the past year, we've heard rumors that Kendall Jenner is dating Justin Bieber, Cara Delevingne, and just about everyone else that she's been photographed with.
Now, Us Weekly is reporting that Kendall is dating Nick Jonas, and the relationship is quickly getting serious.
The tabloid reports that the couple was introduced by Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas, who started dating back in June.
Naturally, double date planning is already in the works:
"Gigi wants Kendall around all the time,” says a source. "She thinks it would be fun for all of them to hang out."
The two stars have serious power couple potential, as Kendall's modeling career gets hotter by the day, and Nick's recent self-titled album has become a surprise radio hit.
Of course, it's not their resumes that drew Nick and Kendall to each other:
"Nick was single and looking to date and there was an obvious attraction," says one source. "He absolutely thinks she’s hot.”
While the couple (Nindall? Kick?) is reportedly already exclusive, insiders say it may be a while before they announce their relationship to fans.
"They had a flirty chemistry from the start," says one insider. "When they're ready and it turns official, we'll start seeing photos."
Hopefully, Nick can avoid getting jealous of all the attention Kendall receives from her male fans.
Is there anyone in Hollywood who hasn't showed up at 1989?!
Taylor Swift's constant stream of celebrity friends at her concerts continued on Saturday when she invited eight of her besties on stage.
Some of the special guests have been a part of the show before; including Gigi Hadid, Martha Hunt, Lily Aldridge, and Karlie Kloss -- as well as some Tay Tay virgins; like Behati Prinsloo, Candice Swanepoel, and Orange Is the New Black's Uzo Aduba!
In fact, the Style singer went on to say that the cheer for Uzo was one of the loudest she's ever heard!
But it wasn't just a girls' night out, because Taylor also invited Nick Jonas to the New Jersey show for a performance of his hit song Jealous!

Wow, Nick Jonas can really hit those high notes!
At the Much Music Video Awards, the singer performed his sultry hit Chains with the help of some scantily clad back-up dancers. We wonder if this song was a tad awkward to sing considering Nick just broke up with his girlfriend, Olivia Culpo -- he's clearly not chained anymore!
Obviously, Jonas hit the song out of the park. We can't say we're surprised though, the singer did get his start on Broadway after all!
The only thing we weren't sure of was Nicky's outfit. From far away it looked like the 22-year-old was wearing a leopard print ensemble!
So, did YOU enjoy Jonas' rendition?
Nick Jonas and his girlfriend of nearly two years, former Miss USA and Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo, have broken up, according to reports.
In related news ... Nick Jonas dated MISS UNIVERSE.
Rumors of trouble in paradise first circulated over the past week, after the duo hit New York City for work reasons, but stayed in separate hotels.
Now a source confirms that it is over ... for now.
Just last week, Jonas appeared on Good Morning America, where the pop singer said long-distance was "always tough," but "it's all good."
An insider close to Culpo says the romance has been rocky for a bit. This past Sunday, she shared a quote hinting at relationship woes.
"People will forget what you said, forget what you did," she wrote, citing Maya Angelou. "But people will never forget how you made them feel."
That or it's just an awesome quote. Who knows.
During the couple's happier days, Nick wrote his hit single "Jealous," specifically for Culpo, who went on to star in his music video for it.
Culpo and Jonas first met at a New York Fashion Week event several years ago, and the young hotties clearly hit it off immediately.
"We’re enjoying the ride together and it’s been a pretty insane year and half," he told Wendy Williams. "Lots of changes in both of our lives."
"She’s been a teammate through all of it," he added.
Somewhere along the way, though, it went south.
We have no problem at all with Nick Jonas in this video.
The artist, who just announced a new record label with Demi Lovato, recently stopped by Capital FM radio and was asked to cover "Problem," the smash hit that put Ariana Grande on the musical map.
Jonas admitted he didn't really know all the words, but that didn't stop him from whisper singing the catchy refrain.
Check out the above footage to see him do it and then read all about how Nick Jonas has totally had sex.
It had to happen at some point, right?
The 2015 Billboard Music Awards are in the books.
Yes, Taylor Swift dominated the podium, taking home nearly every award for which she was nominated.
But the superstar did not actually perform at the event, aside from opening the ceremony with her wildly anticipated Bad Blood video.
Who did take to the stage? Such huge names as Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and Kelly Clarkson.
One was memorable for being off-key; another for getting censored; another for wearing very little clothing; and another for being totally awesome.
Can you guess to whom we're referring with each of these descriptions? Check out 9 of the most memorable Billboard Music Awards performances now!
1. Kanye West - "All Day" (2015 Billboard Music Awards)
2. Kelly Clarkson - "Invincible"
3. Nicki Minaj and David Guetta - "The Night Is Still Young," "Hey Mama"
4. Nick Jonas - Jealous (Billboard Music Awards 2015)
5. Meghan Trainor and John Legend - "Like I'm Gonna Lose You"
6. Mariah Carey Sings Medley of Hits
Lea Michele Shares A First Look At All 15 Of The Main Cast Members Of Scream Queens — But Who’s Missing!?
We didn't realize quite how large this cast was!
But we do have one question: Who's missing!?
From what we can tell, Julian Morris from Pretty Little Liars and Once Upon a Time is the only actor who's not featured in the pic. We wonder what that may mean?
We cannot wait to see how the murder mystery unfolds this September on FOX!
Will U be tuning in??
