This Picture Shows How Dolphins Use Echolocation to “See with Sound”

The world’s first recorded image of what a dolphin sees underwater is here, and it’s astounding.

Dolphins and other mammals like bats use a form of communication and sight called echolocation, bouncing sound waves off objects to locate them, while also generating an image of the object off which the sound waves are bounced. Dolphin communication has long been a subject of study for scientists, especially in the US and the UK, and now, scientists have been able to render a 3D image of a submerged diver based entirely on one dolphin’s echolocation ability. The image is amazing.

This is how dolphins “see with sound”:

Here’s how they did it.

Jack Kassewitz of SpeakDolphin.com used an imaging system called Cymascope, developed by John Stuart Reid, which makes it possible to record and isolate the echolocation sounds dolphins make. It creates 2D images of the sounds, and then a computer program converts these 2D images into 3D.

“We’ve been working on dolphin communication for more than a decade,” wrote Kassewitz. “When we discovered that dolphins not exposed to the echolocation experiment could identify objects from recorded dolphin sounds with 92% accuracy, we began to look for a way for to see what was in those sounds.”

A dolphin named Amaya was an instrumental part of the experiment. She directed her sonar beams to a submerged diver, while a hydrophone recorded the echoes. Jim McDonough, the diver, was unable to use a breathing apparatus while swimming, because there were fears that the bubbles would warp the recording. While Amaya “scanned” the diver with her high-frequency beams, the Cymascope imprinted sonic vibrations.

The experiment was also conducted with Amaya “scanning” a flowerpot, a cube, and a plastic “+” symbol, but it’s the image of the diver that is truly breathtaking.

Kassewitz said of the experiment:

“We were thrilled by the first successful print of a cube by the brilliant team at 3D Systems. But seeing the 3D print of a human being left us all speechless. For the first time ever, we may be holding in our hands a glimpse into what cetaceans see with sound. Nearly every experiment is bringing us more images with more detail.”

Pretty extraordinary. These new developments will help scientists gain deeper insight into how underwater creatures use echolocation, and even if they are sharing their “sono-pictorial” language with other species.

Rare Photo of Billy the Kid Could Be Worth $5M, Someone Paid $2

Kagins.com

It’s the dream of everyone rummaging through their impossibly cluttered attics: find a rare piece of memorabilia you were going to throw away, discover it’s priceless, and become a millionaire.

One collector in Fresno, California wasn’t exactly going through his own junk; rather, he paid $2 for a tintype photograph in a junk shop auction that turned out to be a rare photo of Billy the Kid and his gang, The Regulators, playing a leisurely game of croquet. Oh, and the photo could be worth up to $5 million.

The photo was authenticated earlier this month by a numismatics firm called Kagin’s, Inc. The 4×5 inch photo shows the infamous Billy the Kid in the summer of 1878, and it was possibly taken at a wedding.

This photo is so valuable because there is only one other known photo of the famous outlaw. That photo was taken in 1880 in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, and sold for $2.3 million at auction in 2010. Could the new photograph really be worth more than double that amount?

Billy the Kid is a fixture in Western frontier folklore. His real name was Henry McCarty, but he went by aliases William H. Bonney and Billy the Kid. He was a famous thief and gunfighter, and was captured and sentenced to death, only to escape after killing two guards.

Supposedly, Billy the Kid killed 21 men: one for each year of his life. He was finally captured and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett at Fort Sumner in 1881.

According to the numismatics firm, it took over a year to analyze the data provided in the photo, to make sure that the photograph was authentic beyond the shadow of a doubt. David McCarthy, Kagin’s senior numismatist, said:

“When we first saw the photograph, we were understandably skeptical – an original Billy the Kid photo is the Holy Grail of Western Americana. We had to be certain that we could answer and verify where, when, how and why this photograph was taken. Simple resemblance is not enough in a case like this – a team of experts had to be assembled to address each and every detail in the photo to insure that nothing was out of place. After more than a year of methodical study including my own inspection of the site, there is now overwhelming evidence of the image’s authenticity.”

The acquisition and authentication of the tintype is so important, it’s been called ” the single most compelling piece of Western Americana that we have ever seen.”

If you want to learn more about this historical photo, its acquisition, and the road to its authentication, a two-hour documentary will air this Sunday, October 18th, on the National Geographic Channel. Kevin Costner will narrate the documentary, which will cover Western Americana enthusiast Randy Guijarro’s journey to authenticate the tintype. It will also provide a historical context of the day the photo was taken, interviews with experts, antique photography, and vintage croquet sets.

“I love handling great treasure finds!” said Dr. Donald Kagin, president of Kagin’s, Inc. “This iconic, [...]

Amazing Viral Photo Shows Military Mothers Breastfeeding At Fort Bliss

Facebook.com/TaraRuby

The “normalize breastfeeding” movement just got major support from the U.S. Military, and it’s making us very happy. The photo above, taken by photographer Tara Ruby (Tara Ruby Photography) is making its viral rounds on the Internet today, for an amazing reason: as you can see, it shows military mothers breastfeeding their children while on base at Fort Bliss, and it shows a remarkable sensitivity to women in the military who are breastfeeding mothers.

It also shows support for the Normalize Breastfeeding movement, a social issue that works to change the perception of breastfeeding in public from being perceived as “gross” or otherwise inappropriate, to the way it should be perceived: as wholly natural, life-giving, and beautiful.

Sadly, Facebook itself took down the picture, which shows no nudity, only to have Tara Ruby re-post the photo (with better success) on September 11th. It’s still up and public on her page, and the comments in support of the photo have been overwhelming. The photo, as of the time published, has been shared over 8,500 times, and has garnered well over 11,000 likes.

Comments posted to the original photo have revealed that other posters who shared the image had their posts removed as well. The sharing and liking of this image is therefore a hugely powerful action, as it is an action in support of normalizing breastfeeding and working to combat the perception of it as something inappropriate.

Clearly, the U.S. military, at least at Fort Bliss, has a very different perception of it. Fort Bliss now has a special room specifically for breastfeeding mothers to use, making the entire environment more conducive to raising and properly caring for a child. It makes the environment more inclusive for women, and shows support for the needs of women who have children, and the fact that those children need to be fed.

Tara Ruby actually helped decorate the breastfeeding room, and stayed to take photos of the military mothers in celebration of the event. On her Facebook page accompanying the original photo, Tara Ruby wrote this caption:

Today I believe we made history. To my knowledge a group photo to show support of active duty military mommies nursing their little’s has never been done. It is so nice to see support for this here at Fort Bliss.

Through the guidance of my military friends, the Fort Bliss P3T Program and Breastfeeding in Combat Boots, our Garrison command and our Public Affairs, we were able to show that even our mommies in uniform can provide for their babies.

I was active duty a long time ago when support for breastfeeding moms wasn’t even an option or a consideration. We have come so far. Breastfeeding their babies doesn’t make them less of a soldier, I believe it makes them a better one. Juggling the tasks and expectations of a soldier, plus providing for their own in the best way they possibly can, makes these ladies even stronger for it.

I want to say Thank You to everyone that saw my vision, and helped us in succeeding in making it [...]
